The Boerma family comes from the southern part of Holland; from Heerlen, Hoensbroek and Maastricht and loves cosiness. There for a wonderful, atmospheric school bar can be found in the Boerma Instituut. It is known as Café de Mijnen or The Miners Cafe. As everyone can see, we have decided not to deny our origins.
With a great many, almost antique, mine memorabilia we have attempted to recreate an underground mineschaft, complete with supports, coal, special spark-freetelephones, mining axes, helmets and mine lamps.
South-Limburg is one of the most striking and most beautiful parts of the Netherlands. A region with a character all of its own. Charming with gently roling countryside and, above all, surprising. A place on earth where life is still rich and good.
Limburg is both a Dutch province and a European region with a highly distinct character. Limburg is a province of considerable cultural diversity. The language spoken there comprises numerous related dialects. Even the tiniest village has its own ensemble or brass band. Limburg's cultural heritage abounds with local marksmanship festivals and numerous folkloric events.
Nestled in the foothills of the Limburg Downs and the Eifel region, Heerlen is a special place. Although it was founded by the Romans, it has the appearance and the facilities of a city that grew up in the twentieth century. Heerlen did not develop from a central core; it expanded outwards from the mining communities that surrounded the various coal pits dotted throughout the area. The mining industry spurred Heerlen's growth.
Within just a hundred years it had transformed itself from a small collection of hamlets with about 6.000 inhabitants into a city of 90.000. This unusual history and its situation in two stream valleys have turned Heerlen into a city in which modern architecture and facilities are intertwined with green landscape features.
The plesent part about Café De Mijnen is that everybody feels at home and can be themselves. The atmosphere here is very special. Whether its a new experience or your tenth visit, everyone can enjoy the unique environment and make coming to school a joy.
Before and after lessons can you come here to drink tea or coffee, order a beer or your other favourite drink. During lesson days you can enjoy your lunch here. Of course you can also take some time during lunch to have a look in the around 200 different floral design books, in the shop near the entrance.
Café de Mijnen is for hire for special occasions and for groups. It is also possible to do this for instance in combination with a demonstration or lessons.
We can we provide a hot or cold buffet, live music etc. We can extend the size of the bar area by pushing a wall to one side to offer a good sized space for a larger party.
We did that when Mark and Natasja got married on February 20th 2009. We also open de wall during Christmas Idea! so the Christmas atmosphere in the Boerma Instituut is optimal.
In 2008 a terrace is made behind the institute, so we can enjoy lunch and the sun shine for as long as it lasts here in Holland.
In January 2009 we broke down a wall in the bar and we have created extra space for more seats. There are more mining lamps and clothing hooks.
Café De Mijnen is really worth a visit. Just come in and see for yourself... 'The Limburgers' welcome you.
When an international course ends on Friday afternoon, most of the time we drink a something and for special occasions we have real Limburg beer: Gulpener.
The Gulpener Beerbrewery is a conscious choice for sustainability, taste and top quality. Traditionally the Gulpener brewery has a close connection with the residents of the South Limburg hilly country, where the town Gulpen is centrally located. This connection goes much further than only the name of the beer. The brewery is still actively involved with the region.
The Gulperer brewery offers work to a lot of the residents of the town and region and supports different kinds of social initiatives in the region. In the 90th of the last centaury the developed the beer ‘Limburgs Land’, a local product that is made of pure Limburg consumable materials, which are grown on an environmentally friendly manner. This activity was the breeding ground for the big change-over to the sustainable and top quality road that the took from 2001.
Carnival Coming from the south of Holland, we love carnival. During that time the café is coloured in red, yellow and green. With a nice cold beer we watch the carnaval song competition during a show on LVK on L1 television.
Carnival is always 7 weeks before Easter = 7 x 6 working days minus carnival Monday and carnival Tuesday. Thus that is 40 abstention days. Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21st.
