2 Days Hand Tied Bouquet Course
During the early 1980, in The Netherlands a few ‘brave-hearts’ amongst the florists started to bind their bouquets with the Spiral or Hay-stack method. It was an alternative to the then conventional and general accepted parallel binding method. Up till then, the parallel method was used to bind bridal, sympathy and presentation bouquets. The Hay-stack or Spiral technique involved angling the stems of the materials in the same direction as they are being brought into the bouquet around the hand. This technique did have many added advantages as it allows for easy addition or extraction of materials as well as corrections during the binding process.
The Hay-stack method definitely caught on very quickly. It now has become the No.1 seller for bouquet-works in the country. It is a technique which still fascinates both visitors and the Dutch themselves as they watch transfixed as the florist with speed and dexterity literally turn and bind a bouquet as they wait. And sometimes, not a small bouquet in the bargain.

Day 2
The second day is significantly more difficult and we start with a linear hand-tied bouquet. The linear bouquet is based on the well-known round shape, but in this bouquet all the flowers and materials are placed in rigid groups and lines. This results in a modern form which clearly shows the materials that are incorporated. A plain tall vase is most suitable for this bouquet. A difficult, but very fascinating subject!
After lunch we will make a Freestyle Hand-tied Bouquet. For this freestyle bouquet, everyone has an opportunity to work creatively with the techniques they have already learned. It is almost impossible to determine what the end result will look like in advance and therefore it is not easy to achieve a really beautiful result. .
Day 1
We start with a ‘simple’ Mixed Hand Tied Bouquet. A traditional bouquet in which all the materials are tied together by means of the well-known corn sheaf technique. After cleaning the stems, the materials are placed in the bouquet until this gradually results in a semi circular (Biedermeier) shape.
After lunch we make a Hand Tied Bouquet in Groups. This is also a bouquet tied as a corn sheaf, but this time all the materials are added to the bouquet in groups. This is a very attractive variation on the world famous ‘combined hand-tied bouquet’.

I liked this course very much. It gave me the insights of basic kills, that I missed. Our teacher Mark was very enthusiastic and very patient. He explained everything step by step and showed all the technics. Whenever anyone had a question, Mark would give enough attention to that person and explain and show how to do certain things.
