History
The training establishment of Boerma Instituut did not come into being just like that.
The story begins over 100 years ago in the southern part of Holland called Limburg, where my grandfather Pieter Boerma  at the age of 14, began working with flowers on April 14th 1896 in Maastricht.

Some years later he became a flower grower and established his own business. As chairman of the Limburg Florist society at the end of 1921 he made the proposal, of which in 1922 Fleurop was originated from.

My father Nico Boerma owned a flower shop in Heerlen for many years.

He was also Secretary of the Dutch Florists Society for 32 years and during this time he was chairman of the board of gouvernors of a group that was later known as the Society of Florist Retailers (the VBW) and of Fleurop Interflora.

At the same time he, as the only florist, he was a Member of the college of the organised industry, the highest authority in Holland.
I grew up in this floral environment, learning everything about organisational problems and innovations. This enabled me to become very involved with flowers too.

First I attended the Professional School for Flower Design, which then was one of the few places where this kind of study was provided. After that he attended the first Master Flower Arranger Course and then I completed a Teacher Training Course at the Agricultural College.

As the only Master arranger -official floral artist- in Limburg and as a completely qualified Teacher of Flower Art and Design, I set up a School for Flower Art and Arranging in 1964, the first study course of its kind for florists in Limburg. My wife José was one of my first students.
After a few years my family moved to Aalsmeer. Between 1968 and 1981 I gave lessons at the Rijks Middelbare Tuinbouw School, the present day Wellant College. During these 13 years of day time education we began to give evening classes for a Diploma in Professional Floristry.

From August 1st 1980 Boerma Instituut was established - the International Floral Design School Holland- and we are still the only school in the Netherlands that can offer many possibilities for education in Dutch Floral Design to foreign students, in groups or even in schools.  You will regularly come across people from all over the world in our classrooms.

Through working together with a great many travel organisations and airlines the number of students keeps growing.

To confirm our interest we have hung a world map in the school. On this map you can see our students, from those who have attended private lessons for one day to those who have completed
International Professional Courses.
Unnecessary to say that we are very proud of this map.
